The Art of ART Retention

Despite the life-changing potential of antiretroviral treatment, South Africa has an ART uptake problem among its youth—a huge issue for a country that bears 21% of the world’s HIV burden.

Just 44% of 15-19-year-olds who seek HIV care end up taking ART. So providers are changing tack to make treatment plans stick.

One approach: youth-friendly clubs that offer comprehensive treatment, youth-friendly hours, and staff that don’t judge their behavior.

While “adherence clubs” held within clinics didn’t do so well, when the same concept was transferred to community halls and rebranded as youth clubs, there were impressive results, including 86% 12-month ART retention for newcomers.
