Dark Déjà Vu for Puerto Rico

Many Puerto Ricans slept outside last night and woke up today to a second day without electricity after a series of recent tremors that included a 6.4 earthquake yesterday that killed one and displaced 750, Reuters reports.

Gov. Wanda Vázquez declared a state of emergency and activated the National Guard. And the government promised to restore electricity soon, according toThe New York Times.
But Puerto Ricans vividly remember the government’s failures after Hurricane Maria in 2017—and expressed little faith this would be different.

Some people didn’t get their power back for nearly a year after Maria. Emergency sirens remain broken, after insurance companies denied their claims. Many homes were never repaired.

And the US government still hasn’t released all the promised aid.
