Reimagining Research Culture

Overwhelming stress. Discrimination. Bullying and harassment.
 
That’s what two-thirds of researchers surveyed by Wellcome Trust face regularly at work, the Guardian reports.
 
While most researchers express pride in their field, 78% of the 4,000 polled in the UK believe “high levels of competition are creating unkind or aggressive working conditions.”

Nearly half feel compelled to work long hours, Wellcome Trust says in a news release sharing the findings and calling for a culture change.
 
The current culture puts a premium on output—at all costs. It’s not only harmful to the well-being of researchers; it’s “undermining the quality of research itself," says Wellcome.
 
Now, the Wellcome Trust invites more researchers to share their experiences and help shape its Reimagine Research campaign.
