Babysitters’ Club for Narcan
After-school programs, basketball games, and babysitting classes are a new ground zero for Narcan training.
In rural Carter County, Tennessee, kids as young as 6 are being trained to administer the overdose reversal medication. Then they’re sent home with their own supplies.
Many have run out and come back for more.
But in these socially conservative communities, the strategy also faces fierce opposition. Only 3 schools across 8 Tennessee counties allow the Narcan training.
“I’ve never had a child who was offended or scared ... It’s the adults who think it’s inappropriate,” says Sherry Barnett, who provides the training.
