Burying the Evidence

South Sudan buried years of reports detailing the dire health problems that coincide with the oil operations that prop up the young nation’s economy.

Birth deformities have spiraled since oil production began. People die of “unknown diseases”; babies are born with six fingers, or die after being born with intestines outside of their body. Soldiers’ mercury levels were 7X the US EPA standard.

But a recommended $58 million clean-up is yet to begin, and officials claim there’s little they can do until health defects are scientifically linked to oil operations .

“This is a known tactic,” said Nnimmo Bassey of Health of Mother Earth Foundation.
