Finally, A Genomic Study in an African Population

Researchers have published the first genomic study of schizophrenia in an African population, helping create a fuller picture of the disease’s impact. The the study found several gene-damaging mutations are more common in people with the condition.

The findings match up with previous research, but it’s an important first: nearly all of those studies involved European or Asian populations.

The growing field of genomic research has come under fire for neglecting African populations, who make up less than 3% of participants. That bias limits the potential of diagnostic tests and treatments that may follow.
