Temporarily Unbiased

Both men and women unconsciously think of science as “male,” and that implicit bias plays a role in who gets promoted to elite positions in science, Vox reports.
But simply acknowledging bias can help undercut it, according to a study of hiring practices published in Nature Human Behavior. 
Bias can quickly return when not kept in check, however. A study of France’s National Committee for Scientific Research found that participants promoted more women when they knew bias was being studied—but the implicit bias returned the next year, when they weren’t reminded about the research.
And it’s not just women—but science in general—that suffers when women aren’t equally valued, says Antonieta Rojas de Arias, the first women to lead the Paraguayan Science Society.

“Gender bias no longer has a place in knowledge societies,” she said in a Q&A with SciDev.Net.
