People are understandably be devastated to learn they carry the gene variant known as APOE e4, which greatly increases their chances of getting Alzheimer’s disease. But there’s good news for some: Another gene may protect against its devastating effects.
A new study found that Alzheimer’s diagnosis was 30% less likely among APOE e4 carriers who also carried a variant of the gene klotho. Named for a Greek goddess that wove “the thread of life,” it is purported to promote longevity.
Identifying carriers of the variant may help refine Alzheimer’s studies by ruling them out of research into high-risk groups.
