China Moves to Restrict Academic Research

China has announced new restrictions on academic research into the origins of COVID-19.

A government directive reportedly told Chinese universities that all academic papers on the virus that causes COVID-19 will be subject to extra scrutiny and require official approval.

"I think it is a coordinated effort from (the) Chinese government to control (the) narrative, and paint it as if the outbreak did not originate in China," an anonymous researcher told CNN. "And I don't think they will really tolerate any objective study to investigate the origination of this disease."

The move comes amid a campaign on social media questioning the origin of the virus that causes COVID-19—including statements from Chinese officials.
