COVID-19’s Vascular Attack

Another COVID-19 target: The lining of blood vessels, which can lead to multiple organ failures seen in many patients.
Findings from a new Lancet study may help explain why smokers, who have less healthy blood vessels, have been more vulnerable to the virus. The study analyzed just 3 cases, but autopsies on other COVID-19 patients not in the study also show blood vessel linings “full of virus.”
The researchers suggest therapies to strengthen vascular health may be key to treating coronavirus patients.
But more research is needed with “other laboratory techniques… to confirm true viral infection,” according to the University of Hong Kong’s John Nicholls.
