G7 Rallies around WHO

G7 leaders expressed strong support for the WHO in a virtual summit yesterday, distancing themselves from Trump’s criticism of the agency, The Guardian reports.

Trump called the summit to defend his plans to withdraw funding from the agency earlier this week. In a follow-up call, Germany’s foreign minister, Heiko Maas, described the WHO as the “backbone of the fight against the pandemic” and said it makes no sense to undermine the agency now.

The EU Council, meanwhile, is rallying donors to make up for the crater left by the loss from the US, which is WHO’s largest donor at about $400 million per year.
