How Has Vietnam Avoided the Worst?

With 97 million people and a shared border with China, Vietnam hasn’t reported asingle COVID-19 death and has just 268 confirmed cases.
By March 5, Vietnam had approved 3 test kits, all costing under $25 and manufactured in-country. Top officials send mass texts about the virus. Even the country’s new postage stamps help deliver COVID-19 warnings.

Other efforts are more controversial: Lying about health status can lead to criminal charges. Villages have been “fenced off” because of a single case.

Vietnam's efforts “may not be wholly consistent with liberal ideals, but they are working,” write Robyn Klingler-Vidra and Ba-Linh Tran.
