Searching Sewage for Answers

In the absence of mass testing, sewage may offer an alternative method for estimating the prevalence of COVID-19.

Testing wastewater allows researchers to track traces of the virus excreted via human waste—and a single treatment plant can collect wastewater from over a million people.

Accurately quantifying the numbers of infections in a community based on sampling will be a major challenge, but the
approach could also serve as an early warning sign. While it can take up to 2 weeks for people to develop symptoms severe enough to require hospital care and get a diagnosis, the virus can appear in feces within a few days of infection.
