As the US grapples with the need for “an army” of 100,000 contact tracers, a free online course aims to get Americans trained for the task. Before the pandemic, just 2,200 contact tracers were working in the US, The Washington post.
Featuring actors as well as researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the certificate course covers the fundamentals of contact tracing, including what to do with uncomfortable information. The course is a first step; additional training on how the virus affects a specific community will be needed.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has made the course a centerpiece of its state’s contact tracing efforts—and any part of the state hoping to reopen must hire at least 30 contact tracers per 100,000 residents, AP reports.
