Could the Pandemic Revamp Research in Africa?

For African scientists, the coronavirus pandemic may offer a rare opportunity to fill the research funding gap that has long hindered scientific pursuits on the continent.
The African Academy of Sciences has raised concern that African R&D leans too much on external funding. Its new efforts to secure funds earmarked for COVID-19 could serve as a longer term template for African research.
“It is important to underscore what the African scientists have tried to do here. They have integrated the African Covid-19 priorities with global priorities,” says Moses Alobo, a co-chair of the AAS COVID-19 Response Committee.
