Expediting Deportations Amid the Pandemic

As the Trump administration cites the global pandemic to justify largely sealing the border, the US has ramped up deportations of vulnerable migrant children, sending them back to dire circumstances—in some cases without notifying their attorneys.

Veteran immigration attorneys contend that these expedited deportations violate the law by failing to give unaccompanied children a fair shake at asylum.

“They are using the pandemic as an excuse why they are expelling children,” says Jennifer Podkul of the nonprofit Kids in Need of Defense.
