Mystery Inflammatory Illness Striking Children

Doctors in Europe and New York are following dozens of cases of an unusual illness in children that may be linked to COVID-19.

They are calling it “pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome,” The New York Times reports.

25 children have been admitted at a Long Island hospital alone with symptoms from “reddened tongues to enlarged coronary arteries.” 5 critically ill patients, between the ages 4 and 12, have been admitted there in just the past 2 days.

The pediatric patients presented with high fevers and soaring levels of inflammatory markers as well as rash, abdominal pain, and other signs, STAT reports. Some of the symptoms are similar to those of Kawasaki disease, an acute pediatric heart condition.

UK doctors sent out an alert nearly 2 weeks ago about a "multi-system inflammation" accompanied by flu-like symptoms in children.
The WHO has called on clinicians to systematically capture information on any cases they find in order to improve treatment.

Physicians don’t understand COVID-19’s connection to the cases but theorize that it may involve a massive immune response to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
