Nigeria’s New Hotspot
WHO modeling predicted that COVID-19 would move more slowly through Africa than elsewhere—but countries’ responses vary widely, and new hotspots are emerging.
Despite relatively low official case counts, Kano, Nigeria is one of them. For weeks, authorities in the city of 5 million denied that COVID-19 was a major issue, calling a surge in deaths “mysterious” and attributing them to other illnesses.
But health workers on the ground offer a different story. They have noticed more patients dying than normal. (Many in the city have disregarded social distancing measures.)
Health workers have been forced to treat patients with only surgical masks to protect their own safety—and many have fallen ill.
