China Gives Itself a Glowing Review

China has lauded its own COVID-19 response in a vigorous defense published Sunday, calling the situation a “test of fire” that the country responded to quickly and decisively, The New York Times reports.
The report’s narrative claims that the country kept WHO informed and promptly releasing the virus’s genome sequence and omits key events and criticisms, such as reported delays in releasing key data or a doctor “reprimanded by the police for raising an early alarm.”
And earlier today, Chinese officials lambasted as “incredibly ridiculous” a report claiming COVID-19 may have been circulating in Wuhan as far back as August 2019—well before it surfaced in a seafood market, Reuters reports.
The Harvard Medical School report tracked a steep rise in online searches for symptoms like “diarrhea” and “cough,” and a rise hospital visits using satellite imagery from hospital parking lots.
