‘Climate of Terror’: China Forces Birth Control on Minorities

The Chinese government has sustained a draconian forced birth control campaign aimed at limiting Muslim minority populations—such as Uighurs—while encouraging members of the Han majority to have larger families, an AP investigation found.

Over the past 4 years, the campaign has seen minority women systematically subjected to pregnancy checks, forced sterilization, long-term birth control, and abortions. Those who don't comply are fined and sent to mass detention centers.

“The result of the birth control campaign is a climate of terror around having children,” reporters found. It appears to be working: Birth rates in 2 Uighur-majority regions plummeted more than 60% from 2015–2018.
