Doctors’ Digital Tools Limit Treatment Access for Blacks

Race is included in many digital decision-making tools that guide doctors and can lead to reduced access to treatments for Blacks compared with whites, according to a New England Journal of Medicine article published yesterday.

The tools’ impacts across 9 areas of medicine have led to Black patients being “steered away from treatments or procedures that white patients received,” The New York Times reports.

Example: The configuration of 1 kidney function calculator resulted in Black patients being given better filtration rates than white patients, which could mean the difference between making a transplant list and not.
