“Flattening the Curve” for Whom?

A racist game played by ER staff in British Columbia—guessing the blood alcohol levels of Indigenous patients—is alarming but not surprising, CBC reports.

Such racist and systemic discrimination against Indigenous people by the province’s health system is at the root of COVID-19’s disproportionate toll on Indigenous communities, according to Human Rights Watch.

But as BC enters Phase 3 reopening plans, Indigenous communities still lack basic safety measures; their efforts at information-sharing have been rebuffed by officials.

These failures are a dark spot in BC’s lauded progress against the coronavirus, tribal leaders wrote in a Globe and Mail op-ed.

Ahead of a second wave, they called on BC officials to immediately implement safety measures and end systemic racism.
