With Setback, Lockdown Looming?

Lauded for its success in stemming COVID-19, Germany suffered a setback this weekend as data revealed an uptick in the country’s basic reproduction number that may signal another lockdown.
The country’s coronavirus reproduction number climbed to 2.88 yesterday, meaning that for every 100 people who contract the virus, another 288 will become infected. That was a rise from 1.79 the day before.
The increase raises concerns about the country’s likelihood of containing the virus long term.
Under pressure to reboot the German economy, Chancellor Angela Merkel had eased lockdown measures in recent weeks.
