Stuck in the Middle with WHO

The WHO initially praised China for its “impressive” response and for promptly sharing the virus’s genetic code—but recorded meetings suggest this praise was more appeasement than substance.
Behind the plaudits, acrimony grew as China waited more than a week before releasing the genetic map of the virus and stalled on releasing data that was key to assessing the virus’s threat to the rest of the world.

The revelations, which come days after President Trump cut ties with the WHO over alleged collusion with China, reveal an agency “stuck in the middle” and “urgently trying to solicit more data despite limits to its own authority.”
