US Cases 10X Higher than Reported
COVID-19 may have infected ~20 million Americans—10X the official case count, the CDC said yesterday, CNN reports, citing comments from CDC chief Robert Redfield yesterday.
Redfield’s estimate, based on serology testing for antibodies to the virus, accompanies a disturbing rise in cases across the US—which set a new daily record of 40,000 infections yesterday.
Public health officials are not surprised.
"Every epidemiologist was telling, screaming as loud as we could, that three weeks after Memorial Day, we'd have a peak in the cases, and five weeks after Memorial Day we'd begin to see a peak in hospitalizations and deaths," epidemiologist Larry Brilliant told CNN on Thursday night.
