Nursing home residents are being evicted from facilities—some without their families’ knowledge—and placed in “homeless shelters, rundown motels and other unsafe facilities,"according to a New York Times investigation.
Nursing home staff and residents account for over 40% of the US death toll from COVID-19. But many facilities are deliberately clearing out less-lucrative Medicare and Medicaid patients to make room for more profitable coronavirus patients.
“Involuntary discharges” are allowed, but under federal law facilities are required to safely relocate residents. Recent evictions in 16 states appear to violate those rules, but with ombudsmen making fewer visits to facilities documented cases are likely just the tip of the iceberg.
