Dangerous Territory
The largest indigenous group in Colombia—the Wayuu—have long battled the multinational owners of the one of the world’s largest coal mines, which stands bang in the middle of their ancestral territory.
The Cerrejón mine employs thousands, but Wayuu activists say it's exacerbating COVID-19 risks for an already vulnerable population by polluting their air and water.
Evidence is on their side: Research shows that air pollution raises the risk of dying from COVID-19.
Now, they are calling for UN help to have some mining activities suspended.
