Mosquitoes Getting Away with Murder

The public health workforce is preoccupied with the pandemic, sparing mosquitoes the usual summer scrutiny.

Ohio’s Delaware County hasn’t set a single mosquito trap this year—and the state testing lab is too swamped with COVID-19 testing to test mosquitoes, anyway. Instead, the community will have to wait until mosquito-borne illnesses strike people.

Another complication: The symptoms of some mosquito-borne diseases like West Nile. “I wonder which cases are going to be missed as everyone is going to expect COVID and then move on when they test negative,” says Nina Dacko, a mosquito control program supervisor in Texas.
