America Squandered its Advantages

The US has just 4% of the world’s population but an estimated quarter of its confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths.
Despite the country’s considerable advantages, its response was built on woefully unstable foundations, Ed Yong reports.

“Shredded” social safety nets, a deficit of expertise in the Trump administration, and chronic underfunding of public health are just a few elements that conspired to form a shambolic response.
It didn’t have to be this way.
“I’ve learned that almost everything that went wrong with America’s response to the pandemic was predictable and preventable,” Yong reports.
