Another Mysterious Illness is Coming This Fall

2020 was once predicted as the worst year yet for acute flaccid myelitis, a rare polio-like condition that hits kids every other fall.
While social distancing and school closures may disrupt AFM’s mysterious pattern or limit its reach, officials are warning families not to ignore the signs or delay medical care, ABC news reports.
The condition is rarely fatal but it can cause permanent disability. The signs can start small, such as a thumb that suddenly won’t move.
Days before limb weakness and paralysis, 92% of patients reported having a fever, respiratory illness, or both, according to the latest CDC numbers, CIDRAP reports.
