Children—Especially Black and Hispanic—Are at Risk

Children—especially Black and Hispanic children—are vulnerable to severe COVID-19, according to a CDC report released Friday that chips away at persistent rumors that children are near-immune.

Hispanic and Black children were ~8X and ~5X as likely as white children to be hospitalized. The study of 576 children found that 1 out of 3 were sent to the ICU—close to the trend for adults.

Hispanic adults might be overrepresented in essential occupations, and Hispanic and Black children suffer more from underlying medical conditions that worsen the virus’s impact, the researchers hypothesize.

One bright spot: Even among children hospitalized with severe COVID-19 complications, the fatality rate remains low.
