Feeling Valued Is Priceless

In the US—where Black women die during childbirth at 3–4X the rate of white women—it’s perhaps no surprise that discrimination against people of color giving birth has been exacerbated by the pandemic.
Many are turning to alternative birthing centers to find care rooted in respect.
“In the US we have dictated safety to mean the highest level of technology,” said Joia Crear-Perry, president of the National Birth Equity Collaborative. “But when it comes to birthing, the evidence shows us that what makes us safe is actually being heard and listened to and valued.”
