The Most Powerful Pediatrician You’ve Never Heard Of

For many parents facing allegations of child abuse, their fates lie in the hands of a type of medical specialist they never knew existed: the child-abuse pediatrician.
Hundreds of these specialists operate across the US, stepping in when suspected abuse involves a medical component, concluding whether, say, a bruise is the result of abuse or just an accident.
They have “near-unilateral power in labeling abuse”—but their role is not always neutral, an investigation found.

Many are paid in part by child welfare departments and work with the state to build cases against families, “working within a system that parents don’t understand is stacked against them.”
