WHO is on WhatsApp–Is That a Good Thing?

WhatsApp users can text “hi” in several languages to +41 79 893 1892, and WHO Health Alert will respond with the latest COVID-19 case numbers, deaths, myth-busters, and more.
Sounds like a clever solution for reaching the masses, given the app has 2 billion active users.
But there are a few hiccups—for one, building such a platform is one thing, but managing it in several languages in a constantly shifting pandemic landscape poses major logistical challenges.
Plus, leaning on a Facebook-owned platform to scale pandemic communications raises questions about whether Big Tech scions like Mark Zuckerberg should have such dominance over health communications, over and above other providers. (Ed. Note: See today's top story.)
