More Farmers Choose Death over Debt

India’s farmers were already deep in debt—and committing suicide in alarming numbers—well before the pandemic.

Now as COVID-19 cases accelerate, the debt crisis that has tormented India’s farmers for decades is only getting worse—with likely thousands of farmer suicides in recent months.

For Randhir Singh, who’s accumulated $20,000 of debt to keep his farm afloat, that manifests as a suicide every month in his village.   

The Quote: “We are left with no tears. It has turned our hearts to stone,” he said.
