Deborah Birx: Too Data-Driven?

White House Coronavirus Task Force coordinator Deborah Birx has been praised as a data-driven task master. She has also aggressively undermined the CDC and sometimes pushed the president’s position over scientific consensus, a Science investigation found.

The most prominent example: In seeking daily COVID-19 hospital data, which officials warned was “virtually impossible.” Nevertheless, Birx replaced the CDC’s reporting system—beleaguered but widely understood—with one from a private firm that “consistently reported nonsensical numbers.”

Birx’s job involves walking an impossibly tricky tightrope, and she has prominent admirers, including Anthony Fauci.

Still, sources say her approach follows her PEPFAR leadership style: “draconian management and unrealistic data demands.”
