President Trump delivered the news himself via a late-night tweet: He and his wife Melania have tested positive for COVID-19.

Trump and the first lady are “both well at this time,” according to a statementfrom the president’s physician Sean Conley.

Both plan to isolate at the White House while he continues to work.

One of Trump’s closest aides, Hope Hicks, began showing symptoms at a Wednesday election rally for Trump and was quarantined on the flight back, The Washington Post reports. She had spent extensive time with Trump in the past week and has been seen maskless on “multiple occasions,” the Post reports.

Just weeks before Election Day, the news follows a flurry of packed, mostly maskless campaign rallies, and months of Trump’s inner circle openly ignoring COVID-19 safety protocols.

Hours before announcing his diagnosis, he told a crowd that “The end of the pandemic is in sight,” CNN reports.

Even at the best of times, the president’s health is a matter of national security, The Atlantic notes.
