Unforced Errors

The COVID-19 pandemic is far from over—but it’s not too early to start thinking ahead to the next one, and that means identifying the key errors of this one.

According to the Council on Foreign Relations’ Independent Task Force, US and global leaders  “provided the illusion—but not the reality—of preparedness” for inevitable pandemics, failing to adequately invest in prevention, detection, and response capacities.

America’s deeply flawed response, compounded early mistakes with “unforced errors on public health risk communication.”

A hamstrung WHO hasn’t helped. While it “has the mandate and expertise to lead global epidemic and pandemic response… it is beleaguered, overstretched, and underfunded.”
