‘Aging Out’ Amid COVID-19

The pandemic has robbed many youth in foster care of the usual opportunities to prepare for life on their own, usually provided in the 6 crucial months before they age out of the system.
The situation varies by state. While California put a moratorium on aging out during the pandemic, a bill that would extend foster care has languished in New York’s state Senate.
Those who have aged out during the pandemic report struggling to pay rent, losing access to housing and mental health supports, struggling with online schooling, and being left wondering: "Who is going to look out for me?"
