‘I Thought You Were Dead’

25. 42. None of the residents of Bronxwood, a New York assisted living facility, know how many of their fellow residents have died from the coronavirus. 

Bronxwood representatives haven't said. They don't have to because it's not a medical facility, according to a must-read ProPublica article.

Assisted living facilities (a middle ground between home and nursing homes) have soared in popularity in recent decades, but they are not subject to federal oversight and are not required to provide full-time medical staff.

Yet in New York, half of those in assisted living are over 85 and a third have some other form of dementia.

“If infection control was limited and regulation was already ineffective in nursing homes, it’s almost nonexistent in assisted living,” said David Grabowski, a Harvard Medical School professor.
