COVID-19 has sidelined another global crisis that knows no borders: climate change. Except this one has no vaccine.
The pandemic has exposed even wealthy nations’ inability to prepare for public health shocks wrought by climate change, according to the influential Lancet Countdown report 2020, Reuters reports.
- Two-thirds of cities say climate change will wreak havoc on their public health infrastructure.
- Just half of 101 countries surveyed had national plans for health and climate.
- Only 4 countries' plans are funded.
Meanwhile, countries are “doubling down” on fossil fuels, according to another damning report from the UN, The Guardian reports. And 50% more coronavirus recovery funding is going to fossil fuels than to clean energy.
“This is suicidal,” said UN Secretary General António Guterres in his strongest language yet on the topic, the Guardian also reports.
A Sliver of Hope: China, the EU, and the incoming Biden administration are committed to achieving net-zero emissions by mid-century.
