6-Month Follow up

A new Lancet study—the longest term follow-up study so far—offers a snapshot of COVID-19 symptoms 6 months after symptoms onset.

Surveying 1,733 of COVID-19 patients discharged from a Wuhan hospital, researchers found:

  • Most common symptoms: Fatigue or muscle weakness, sleep difficulties, and anxiety or depression

  • Women and those with more severe illness were more likely to report persistent psychological symptoms

  • Neutralizing antibodies significantly declined between the acute phase of illness and recovery, raising concern about the possibility of reinfection (though reinfection is still considered highly unlikely, according to the US NIH)

  • Abnormal lung function was higher in patients with more severe illness, underscoring the need for post-discharge care.
