Government Gets Revenge Behind Bars

In Egypt’s prisons, dissenters are being punished by being deprived of their right to health, according to a damning new Amnesty International report based the experiences of dozens of inmates.

A decade on from Egpyt’s 2011 uprising, the country’s prisons are “packed with brave men and women who were at the forefront of the struggle for social and political justice.”

Among ballooning prison populations, inmates’ health needs are ignored and those considered government opponents are targeted for mistreatment.

"With the stakes so high and the prevailing climate of impunity in Egypt, it is essential for the international community to respond with purpose and urgency,” said Amnesty’s Philip Luther.
