Making Way for More Humane Border Policy

The masses might have missed it, but on New Year’s Eve, President Trump quietly signed a “holiday miracle” into law: The Missing Persons and Unidentified Remains Act.

This rare bipartisan legislation releases funds to respond to migrant deaths and establish “rescue beacons,” and mandates annual reporting by federal agencies on the issue, The Intercept reports.

An average of one person a day dies attempting to enter the country.

What’s next? The US government’s “Remain in Mexico” program must be swiftly dismantled, according to a Human Rights Watch statement imploring President-elect Biden to take action as promised. The 2-year-old program “subjects children and adults to serious, ongoing harm, including abduction and rape,” the group wrote in a103-page investigation.
