China Held Back Data, Investigators Say

China refused to share raw data with the WHO team probing the origins of Covid-19—defying “standard practice” for an outbreak investigation, investigator Dominic Dwyer told Reuters Saturday.

The team was denied access to hundreds of thousands of blood samples amid clues that more than a dozen strains of the virus were circulating in Wuhan by December 2019, according to CNN

The White House expressed “deep concerns” over China’s transparency and handling of the process in a statement on Saturday. The UK supported US concerns about access granted the investigators, according to Reuters.

China shot back by criticizing the US for undermining the WHO in recent years, The Hill reports.

Although investigators appeared to rule out a lab leak before they left China, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Friday that all hypotheses on the p pandemic’s origins “are on the table,” Science notes.

The team’s full report is expected next week.
