Ebola Resurgence in DRC

A new Ebola case has been detected in Butembo, DRC, where a previous outbreak ended last June, the WHO reports.

The woman, the wife of an Ebola survivor, died February 3.

North Kivu provincial health authorities, with Ministry of Health and WHO support, are leading efforts to trace and treat the contacts. 70 have been identified so far.

The WHO emphasized that it “is not unusual for sporadic cases to occur following a major outbreak.”

But residents asked why officials took 4 days after the woman was tested to announce results. “It’s frustrating because the contacts will have moved and it will be difficult to find them,” Vianey Kasondoli, a Butembo resident, told the AP.
