New Syndrome in Sanctuary Chimps

A mysterious disease is killing chimpanzees in a Sierra Leone sanctuary even after medical treatment.
Researchers say “epizootic neurologic and gastroenteric syndrome” was strongly linked to a bacterium genus known as Sarcina, but its unique genetic features may explain its unusual virulence. Chimpanzees suffered gastrointestinal and neurologic signs and died suddenly.
Rare cases of Sarcina infection in humans have been reported, but no known ENGS-related human disease has occurred.

Researchers propose classifying the organism as a new species that warrants deeper research.
