In Florida, Doses For Those in the Know

Disparities in the virus’s toll are being mirrored in Florida’s vaccine rollout.

In Palm Beach County, Black people make up 18% of residents; Hispanic people 21.7%. And yet as of March 1, these communities had received just 4.1% and 4.7% of vaccines respectively, STAT reports.

In the largely Black and Hispanic community of Pahokee, wealthy white out of towners have received the lion’s share of COVID-19 vaccines at recent drives.

The lack of a booking system made vaccine events for underserved communities into first-come, first-serve events for those in the know.

But as BuzzFeed News reports, ID requirements may stop vaccine tourists, but they could also end up shutting out vulnerable residents who qualify for the vaccine.
