Pickup Trucks Are Getting Bigger—Literally and Figuratively

Some of the largest American pickup trucks are the size of “three Honda Civics.” And in May 2020, more pickups than regular cars were sold in the US for the first time.

It’s a deadly trend. Large pickups and SUVs are notably more lethal to fellow road users; their growing footprint on US roads has been met with a spike in fatalities among pedestrians and bicyclists

The massive trucks are contagious. One social worker owns one “because everyone else in my town does, and it’s the only way I can get around without feeling like I’m gonna die.”
