Covid Cash: Just ‘Wallpaper and Drapes’

Health departments using fax machines to report COVID-19 cases. Antiquated computer systems predating the iPhone. Public health workers paid so poorly they qualify for public aid.
On top of such weakened infrastructure, the tens of billions in pandemic emergency funding, while welcome, amounts to “wallpaper and drapes,” says de Beaumont Foundation CEO Brian Castrucc—a shabby cover for years of neglect and raided public health coffers.
Public health officials worry that when the cash infusion dries up, they’ll be back where they started—unprepared for the next crisis.
